About Kamakhya Temple
Kamakhya is among the 51 Shakti Peethas — sites where parts of Goddess Sati fell, according to legend. The temple has ancient origins (current structure largely 16th–17th century) and is central to Tantric worship in eastern India. The inner sanctum has no idol; the goddess is worshipped as a natural stone yoni in a cave-like chamber, covered by a red cloth.
Unlike many temples with towering shikharas, Kamakhya's architecture blends indigenous Khasi and Ahom influences with a distinctive hemispherical dome. The complex includes several smaller temples dedicated to the Dasa Mahavidyas (ten forms of the goddess).
