Legend holds the temple was born from Shiva's fury at Daksha's yagna — and later pacified into a site of both Shaiva and Vaishnava worship. The unique open-sky swarg mandap (circular hall) has pillars with no two identical carvings — celestial dancers, musicians, and mythological scenes in profusion.
